This was an intentional time gap to distance the events of Portal from Half-Life. The only other time relation known here for certain is that Portal 2 takes place at least 50,000 years after the first, also indicated in The Final Hours of Portal 2. The Final Hours of Portal 2 states that it's sometime between HL1 and HL2, no more specific than that.

GLaDOS's cryptic words referring to an outside "them" suggest that the Combine's occupation of the planet is in full swing by then, but this still doesn't give an exact point of reference in relation to the events of Half-Life 2. When Chell is woken up to first begin her testing, it may have been days, months, or even years since GLaDOS took over the facility. The timeline states that GLaDOS was activated at Aperture several days before the Black Mesa incident happens in HL1.*īeyond that, though, there aren't any exact indicators as to what's happening in the outside world when the Portal games take place. However, outside references have given hints as to the game's time of occurrence in relation to Black Mesa. Within the Portal series, there are no explicit in-game references that precisely identify its date in the overall Half-Life timeline.
